Webinar: What happened to Evangelicalism?

Original Webinar Date:

July 1, 2020 8:00 – 9:30 PM Eastern

William B. Evans, professor of Bible and religion at Erskine College, recently wrote:

The sad fact is that evangelicalism, with its historic and reflexively individualistic focus on saving souls, simply doesn’t have much of anything distinctive to offer in response to the pressing social questions of the day, and to the race question in particular.  And seventy or so years of evangelical preoccupation with “Christian worldview” apparently hasn’t gotten us very far either.

Prof. Evans concludes his article by saying that in light of the fragmentation in the evangelical world, “I frankly don’t see how a religious movement with such scant theological resources and depth can survive.” (“Put a Fork in It; Evangelicalism, That Is”)

Is he right? And if so, what went wrong?

Part of the problem is that most worldview discussions have looked at the biblical worldview in the abstract and analyzed non-Christian worldviews but have never examined the de facto worldview within evangelicalism. Add to that a rejection of history and tradition in favor of “relevance,” and the resources to address race and other social issues that were once a part of evangelicalism have all but disappeared.

Webinar: Critical Theory and
Racism in America

Original Webinar Date:
Wednesday, June 17, 2020, 8:00 PM Eastern

The protests and the rioting and looting in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the police have brought the issue of racism in America to the fore. As Christians, we must oppose racism whenever and wherever we see it. But does that mean we must support the most outspoken leaders of the anti-racism movement? What are the core ideas of Critical Theory, the worldview that underpins Black Lives Matter and similar organizations?

In this webinar, we will look at the development of Critical Theory, how it works as a worldview, and provide a biblical critique of its ideas. We will also explore a more biblically grounded approach to race and race relations. We will have some time for questions and answers at the end.
